Chester's Community Grocery Co-op was formed in March 2006. It was formed in response to the community's desire to meet a crucial need that was not being met in the City of Chester - access to quality, fresh, healthy produce and groceries. Its original owner-members believed that people should have access to quality, nutritious
foods at affordable prices
This drive to meet this need came as a direct result of there not being a quality source for food in the City of Chester. The last supermarket left 17 years ago. So the community decided to step-up and take on the challenge of opening its own grocery store – “a community-owned grocery store” with a direct benefit to the local community and economy while having a direct benefit on surrounding communities and economies.
Chester's Coop or The Co-op (as it is known now) started with 13 member households and has grown to over 100 since it started, and growing, We have committed our time and energy to building our community and contributing to its well-being. Our efforts are growing stronger as more people begin to understand the impact that their investment into the co-op will have on their community by becoming an owner-member. |

By building a food co-op through owner-member equity, labor as well as through a more direct relationship to their food source Chester's Co-op has been able to connect communities, economies and people in beneficial ways that have life and economic changes overall.
For the first time in decades people are returning to the city to shop at Chester's Co-op and some are coming into the city for the first time although they may live on 5 miles away. Folks are buying food in their city to eat at home that is high quality, nutritious and affordable.
They don't only come for the local food selection we offer, whether it is our loganics© (Chester's Co-op word for local organics) or local conventional produce or our local bread. They also come for the community connection and exposure to people and ideas that may be different or the same. As we are finding out, great food can be the common denominator to building great communities and economies.
We are currently located at 501 Edgmont Ave. and we are open 10-2 on Saturdays and Wednesday12-6 (starting May 28th) thanks to a generous friend to Chester's Co-op, Paul Fayeko the owner of Andres Café, we have been able to grow our business as we prepare to extend and expand our operation in a larger facility.
Our objective is to stimulate the development of a healthy community by providing access to one of the most basic and vitals needs of any community – great quality food at affordable prices. We hope you will join us.
